Update from JB

Big thank you for all of you helping each other and particulary me this week.

Postpartum depression can really take a well-functioning individual down.  Medicine will take about two weeks to get  into her system to help her with the anxiety and doubts.  She will only be on it a week Thursday. But the side affects are anxiety and shakiness.  She is doing well taking care of Isabella but she has to force herself to stay calm to do it. Keeping a train of thought is hard, making a decision is hard and she thinks she isn't doing anything right.

Thanks again - Iam so lucky to have all of you as great support system  so that I can offer up a support system for Joel and Val.    JB

Steampunk-Gaslight Books

A new term for me too!  Apparently, they refer to science fiction/fantasy type books.  Perhaps The Golden Compass or Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea would be good suggestions.  Goodreads.com had a list of suggestions as well.  PH

Patron attitude problems

As far as this particular patron, I have had her express great displeasure in the past, when she did not feel responsibility for her actions.  It was quite a while back, when she returned a boat load of items late, and she got really huffy about it.  It was just after I started on at the circulation desk, so I don't remember much about the particulars.  My recollection is that she demanded she not be charged, because she had to go to a funeral.  Seems like we just let it be, and she eventually paid up.

Anyhow, seems like we will just have to be vigilant for a while like Joan said.  As a sometimes possessor of bad moods, they do pass after a while.  It is hard to know where someone is coming from.  DCF

Questions and Responses

CBR Team said...
6-19-10

My E-mail response to the consumer with the following question:
"Is it possible to register for a library card online. I am having difficulty getting into the library when open due to my crazy work schedule."
Then following is my response via E-mail - a face-to-face response may be a bit different. Along with the library card form going in the mail so did a book mark with our hours. For this particular patron this is the best we can do.

At this time it is not possible - the best I can do is drop a form in the mail for you but you would still need to stop in because we require a proof of I.D. to issue a library card. If your driver's license does not have your current address on it a piece of mail or a bill addressed to the Blue Spruce Lane address can be used as proof that you live there. I will put it in the mail on Saturday. Thank you in advance for signing up for a library card.

Also, I could have suggested going to another library in SCLS that have more evening hours or Sunday hours but reminding her that correct I.D. is extremely important and she would not get her card immediately because the application form would need to be sent back here and then a card would be issued and could be mailed to her. What it comes down to is no one defined answer necessarily fits all situations.

Technical information

Since we now have some room for organizing, I am starting to put techie type material in the blue magazine holder titled "Technical Info Hints and Tips."  There are print outs of miscellaneous. info that I put in there the first day we rearranged.
The newest folder is all of the Wireless Server information.  As I add things, I will try and remember to add them to the blog.  Everyone seems to want info on paper, so we'll see if this works.

New Library Building Information

Staff
On the bulletin board will see a document called "Program for Construction".  (Don't get too excited) You should all take the time to read this and then if any one from the community would ask about it they can look at it too.

This document is just one of the many documents needed when working towards a building project of any type.  It is a guideline for an architect or builder.  Trustees from the library board worked together to create this "program for construction" or another term could be "building program statement".  This document was created using some of the elements of the original program statement from several years back and very some very new ideas.  These new idea have been part of trustee's conversation since it has been determined that the new library will be built onto the Amundson Building and/or Amundson Building property.

I felt since it was finalized and passed by the board officially it should be on display versuses tucked in a file.

When asked  any question like the following: "When is the new library going to be built."
Be upbeat as possible.  "Someday we will have a new building but it will take many working together to raise
the dollars needed."  Or some such leading statement - leading the asker into the recognition - it will take
him/her and many others who want to see it happen to work to make it happen.

Staff Meeting Minutes - Volunteer Coordinator

Kathy did an excellent job of summarizing the information we tossed about as far as the duties of the volunteer coordinator.  She also included training information that would be useful for the shelf readers.  Please take a look and add any information to the comments section.

I added a link to the information (Minutes from Jan. 18 meeting - Volunteer coordinator.) , which is now in Google Documents.

(We found the old shelving instructions, so Joan and Kathy will take a look at that to be added.)  We're on our way!!

Update on Friends Projects

Workshops will be starting Jan. 25th - sign-up sheet is by phone. Mentors are needed - if you believe someone would be good or believe someone has a slight interest give information to Sharon Erb and she will contact them to encourage them.

Keep in mind any one who you think may need or like to be served by the Home Bound book service. Rough start for some of the participants with the volunteers getting coordinated and participants reading all their books and being done way before volunteer got back to them.

Any lap top computers that the workshop participants use during open library hours are suppose to be checked out to them. All the lap tops have bar codes to scan - all workshop participants are encouraged to get library cards.

Please ask questions as they arise.
